A father of seven was shot and killed aboard a New York City bus after an argument that began when he confronted another passenger who was speaking loudly on a cellphone, police allege, according to reports.

Jonathan Pettigrew, 41, was shot in the abdomen on a BX36 bus near White Plains Road and East Tremont Avenue in the Bronx on June 8, according to information provided by the New York Police Department to PEOPLE.

The dispute began after Pettigrew confronted another passenger who was speaking loudly on a cellphone, according to CBS New York, ABC7 New York and News 12, which cite police. The argument escalated, and the passenger shot Pettigrew before fleeing the scene.

Pettigrew was transported to Jacobi Hospital, where he was pronounced dead, per the NYPD.

Surveillance video obtained by the outlets showed passengers rushing off the bus after gunfire erupted. Additional footage obtained by News 12 showed Pettigrew exiting the bus and collapsing on the sidewalk moments later.

Pettigrew’s brother, Avery Pettigrew, told CBS New York that he struggled to process the news of his brother’s death.

“They told me my brother was deceased and I didn’t believe it,” Avery said.

Avery described his brother as funny and passionate about sports.

“He’s a good kid. He’s not a street person. He’s very funny. He’s very into sports,” Avery told CBS New York.

CBS New York and News 12 reported that Pettigrew was on his way to pick up one of his daughters after work when the shooting occurred. The outlets also reported that he was the father of seven children.

“I just want justice and hope he pays for what he’s done,” Avery told CBS New York and News 12.

No arrests have been announced in the case. The investigation remains ongoing.
