Texas father has shot and killed a carjacker who brazenly tried to steal his vehicle while his family was inside it.

The unidentified man and his relatives were sitting in a Garland parking lot when a bandit approached the driver’s side door and attempted to get in, surveillance video obtained by Fox 4 showed.

The father immediately got out of the sedan and attempted to keep the assailant from entering it, while the rest of his family fled, around 3.30pm on Sunday in Garland, near Dallas.

The two struggled as the carjacker managed to get inside the driver’s seat. They continued to tussle until the criminal pushed the father out and stood up, closing the back door before getting into the vehicle again.

The father managed to get around to the passenger’s side front door, where he allegedly fired more than ten rounds at the assailant.

The criminal was taken to hospital, where he was pronounced dead, police said.

The father turned his gun over to police and is cooperating in the investigation, officials added.

Police are unlikely to file charges against the Texan, as Lieutenant Pedro Barineau told Fox 4 that his actions ‘seemed to be self-defense.’

Tatiana Starks, who manages a nearby smoke shop, said she noticed the man had attempted to get into other vehicles prior to going to the family-of-eight’s car.

‘You could definitely tell that he was not in his right state of mind,’ she told the outlet.  ‘I’m just glad that the man was able to protect himself and his family.’

‘It’s just a blessing that the kids and the family walked away with no injuries,’ she added.

Police confirmed the man had attempted to illegally enter two other cars after he ‘crashed into two vehicles,’ Barineau told NBC Dallas-Fort Worth.

He attempted to get into both vehicles before eventually making his way to the family’s sedan, which was parked near a gas station off Highway 66.
