According to Jam Press, the young player and his mother Albana Kastriot were having dinner on Friday at home in Pollenza on his 20th birthday.
Riccardo’s father Mario Merkuri and older brother were both out at the time.
It is believed the footballer and Albana, 53, began quarrelling at the table as neighbours reportedly heard shouting and called the police shortly afterwards.
When police officers arrived, Albana was found unconscious in the bathroom, surrounded by blood while Riccardo had already fled the scene, apparently in shock and possibly believing he had killed his mother.

The same source claims the footballer, who had recently found work as a labourer, left his mobile phone behind and drove to Civitanova Marche where he walked to the edge of the dock and jumped into the water.
CCTV footage reportedly captured him climbing back out, removing his jacket and jumping to the icy water a second time.
According to NeedToKnow, divers recovered Riccardo’s body on Sunday after 38 hours of searching.
A forensic doctor deemed hypothermia and drowning as the cause of the youngster’s death.
Albana remains in a medically induced coma in Macerata with a fractured jaw and other facial injuries – she may undergo maxillofacial surgery this week.
Her condition is serious but not life-threatening.
Riccardo’s Albanian parents have lived in Pollenza since the 1990s with his mother running a beauty salon and his father a small construction business.
