King Charles and Queen Camilla are on a historic US state visit, but President Donald Trump has been called out for allegedly making a “disrespectful” gesture when he greeted them at the White House

King Charles and Queen Camilla have touched down in the US this week, but the President has already faced criticism for how he greeted them. On Monday (April 27), footage began circulating of the Royals’ arrival at the White House, where they were welcomed by President Donald Trump and First Lady Melania Trump.

 

Yet, when they began conversing, observers were swift to highlight behaviour that many considered “disrespectful”. On X, the Office of the First Lady posted a clip, with the caption: “President Donald J. Trump and First Lady Melania Trump welcome King Charles III and Queen Camilla of the U.K. at the South Portico of the White House | Monday, April 27, 2026.”

Nevertheless, sharp-eyed watchers quickly noticed something after Trump was reported to have delivered an “aggressive handshake”. Following the clip’s appearance on X, people were eager to voice their opinions.

One promptly shared an image of Trump touching Queen Camilla’s arm, commenting: “This is so disrespectful.”

While some felt the gesture was “fine” as they reckoned “the President was just being helpful”, others have also highlighted how the President’s conduct may be viewed as controversial. Some additionally observed he placed his hand on King Charles’s arm as well.

Another commented: “I do not think you are supposed to touch a King or Queen but, of course, Trump loves breaking protocol.”

A third replied: “I noticed that too. Trump also touched Camilla.”

Someone else also chimed in with: “Forget etiquette – Donald has never heard of the word, nor has he heard of respect.”

For those who may not be aware, initiating physical contact with a King or Queen is strictly forbidden. Under British Royal Protocol, the only acceptable form of physical contact is a handshake, and only if they offer it first.

Hugging, kissing or placing an arm around a Royal is strongly discouraged, as it is deemed inappropriate. While this carries no legal obligation, observing this tradition is always regarded as the courteous thing to do.

Some onlookers did feel the Royals received a warm reception, however, celebrating their arrival at the White House. One said: “Thank you for such a warm welcome to Their Majesties!”
