San Francisco 49ers superstar running back Christian McCaffrey missed all but four games in a wasted 2024 season, but the 2023 rushing champion provided an encouraging injury update ahead of Thursday’s NFL Draft.
“Run CMC” won Offensive Player of the Year honors in 2023 after rushing for a league-leading 1,459 yards. McCaffrey finished with 2,023 yards of offense and an NFL-leading 21 TDs from scrimmage, leading the 49ers to a Super Bowl 58 appearance.
But the 49ers’ bid to avenge their heartbreaking Super Bowl loss to the Kansas City Chiefs was decimated by injuries to key players. Christian McCaffrey was limited to four games because of Achilles tendonitis, calf and PCL injuries.
As the 49ers commenced offseason workouts, McCaffrey provided a promising injury update to reporters, per David Bonilla of 49ers Webzone:
“I’m feeling great. It’s been such a smooth process, a lot of hard work. As soon as that injury happened in Buffalo, I was kind of—this was my goal, to not miss a day of OTAs, be back, ready to go, with nothing hindering me, and that’s where I’m at.”
Unfortunately, injuries have derailed a large portion of Christian McCaffrey’s prime years. In 2019, he became just the third running back (joining Marshall Faulk and Roger Craig) to finish with both 1,000 receiving and 1,000 rushing yards in the same season.

However, injuries limited McCaffrey to 10 total games over the next two years. The Carolina Panthers decided to move on from McCaffrey ahead of the 2022 trade deadline, sending him to the 49ers in a league-altering blockbuster.
A 49ers’ Bounce-Back Season Depends On A Healthy Christian McCaffrey

It’s no coincidence that the 49ers have played in two NFC Championship Games and one Super Bowl in McCaffrey’s two healthy seasons. And it’s no coincidence the team unraveled without him for most of 2024.
Simply put, the 49ers need McCaffrey to be healthy if they’re to re-emerge as a championship contender in 2025. San Fran has had plenty of good running backs in Kyle Shanahan’s offense, but none of them could single-handedly take over games like McCaffrey.
The decision to trade Jordan Mason to the Minnesota Vikings clearly indicates that the 49ers are awfully confident in McCaffrey’s recovery and ability to bounce back.
