Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s body language during Colombia tour points to key messages about their personality, according to an expert.

Meghan Markle has so far been the “star” of the show during her and Prince Harry’s pseudo-royal tour in Colombia, according to a body language expert.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex have been touring the South American country since Thursday and attended events promoting mental health for young people and highlighting ways to combat cyberbullying.

Now body language specialist Judi James analysed the couple’s movements on day one of their visit and suggested that it was the duchess who seemed to take the lead during most of their engagements.

Speaking to Express.co.uk, Ms James explained that Meghan arrived with a “Here I am!” social smile and appeared to be aware that “the interest and attention would be primarily on her”.

Meanwhile, Harry’s body language appeared to “fluctuate” between wary anxiety and bounding enthusiasm, whereas his wife’s “every pose and move” was “infused with regal elegance”.

The body language expert said: “The couple’s appearance on this tour of Columbia has so far shown Meghan to be emphatically the star and the one in the lead role.

“Harry’s tow-along pose as he led her out for their first appearance was a classic A-list configuration that celebrity power couples tend to use exiting top nightclubs and restaurants.

“His smile was tempered and his expression more wary but Meghan arrived with a ‘Here I am!’ social smile, with a gleam of excitement in her eyes and a symmetric ‘royal’ mouth smile making it look as though she felt aware that the interest and attention would be primarily on her.”

“It was Meghan performing a very warm greeting ritual on the country’s VP before leading Harry to come up for his own, much more polite handshake. Meghan stood between the two with her arms around each of them as though brokering the intros as Harry lowered his head in a virtual bow.

“It was also Meghan posing next to the VP in the middle of the line-up for the formal photos, which would normally be the spot for her royal husband, standing in a mirrored pose as her host with arms straight down at their sides in a gesture of confidence and status, while Harry stood at the end with his hands clasped in the more passive fig-leaf pose. She has taken the lead in conversations during meetings, while Harry seems to stand back slightly allowing her to take the lead.”

She added: “While Harry’s body language has fluctuated between wary anxiety and bounding enthusiasm, with some nervous pulling at and fiddling with his jacket while his feet shuffled on the floor, Meghan’s every pose and move has been infused with regal elegance.”

Ms James noted: “Interestingly this seems to be a regal look that she has mainly adopted herself as, apart from Kate and before her Diana, royal women tend to lack the kind of Vogue-style elegance and show more as practical countrywomen and horse riders.

“Meghan’s grace looks more performative and she does it very well.”
