New Delhi — A Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner operated by Bharat Airways crashed into a densely populated residential area in South Delhi moments after takeoff from Indira Gandhi International Airport, killing all 173 passengers and crew aboard and claiming the lives of at least 27 people on the ground. The death toll is expected to rise as rescue operations continue into the night.
Among the ground fatalities was a 26-year-old pregnant woman, identified as Saira Malik, who was walking along a footpath near Shastri Nagar when the aircraft came plummeting from the sky, tearing through rooftops and exploding upon impact.
Witnesses say the scene was apocalyptic.
“There was a loud, low sound — like thunder tearing the earth,” said local shopkeeper Arvind Kumar, who saw the aircraft descending at a steep angle. “And then — fire, smoke, screams. And silence. Saira was just walking. She didn’t even look up.”
Saira was six months pregnant with her first child. Her husband, Fahad Malik, arrived at the scene only minutes later, unable to comprehend the smoldering ruin where his wife had just stood.
“She had gone for a check-up. She waved at me from the street. Ten minutes later, everything was gone,” he said, his voice shaking.
The aircraft had taken off at 9:12 AM en route to Bangalore. According to preliminary reports, the flight lost engine thrust within minutes of takeoff. The pilot declared an emergency but could not return to the airport in time.
An Entire Neighborhood Shaken
The crash site is now a cordoned-off zone of twisted metal and shattered homes. At least 12 residential structures were destroyed, displacing over 60 families.
Emergency personnel described the wreckage as among the worst in India’s aviation history. Firefighters battled flames for hours before gaining control. Black box recovery teams have begun combing through the debris, while civil aviation officials and Boeing representatives are expected to arrive for a joint investigation.
National Mourning Declared
Prime Minister Arjun Khanna called the crash a “profound national tragedy” and announced a day of mourning. Compensation packages have been promised for victims’ families, though many say no monetary relief can mend what has been lost.
“We mourn every life, but some stories just shatter the soul,” said Health Minister Meera Das, referring to the death of Saira and her unborn child. “It reminds us how cruel fate can be.”
Questions Mount Over Aircraft Safety
Bharat Airways, which had added the Dreamliner model to its fleet only last year, has grounded all 787-8 aircraft pending investigation. Aviation experts are already raising questions about possible mechanical failure, pilot response, and ground safety protocols.
For now, a nation grieves — not just for those in the sky, but for those like Saira Malik, whose only mistake was being in the wrong place at the wrong time.
