A woman has died and a pilot has been hospitalised in a glider crash in Tasmania’s southern midlands.

The two-seat glider crashed at a private airfield on Tunbridge Tier Rd in Tunbridge, about 106km north of Hobart, shortly before 2pm Sunday.

Tasmania Police said a woman aged in her early 50s sustained injuries in the crash and died at the scene.

The pilot of the glider, a man in his mid-60s, suffered serious injuries and was airlifted to Royal Hobart Hospital.

Inspector Aleena Crack said the man and woman were part of a larger group – including the woman’s husband – who were at the airfield on Sunday.

“There was a larger group of people at the airfield at the time,” she said.

“This is obviously a tragic outcome for these families and friends.”

Emergency services remain at the scene, and an investigation has been launched to determine the cause of the crash.
